And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Matthew 16:18

From Peter to rock

Written Michael Herbert

Jesus called Peter the rock. Was he sure Peter was the right guy,and this rock, what kind of name is that to give Peter. After all, Peter cut the ear off a soldier who came to arrest Jesus. Jesus placed and healed the guard’s ears. Next Peter says he would never deny Jesus. Here again, not a statement a “rock” would make. Then the grand daddy of them all was when Peter denied Jesus three times before a girl. Not exactly a “rock” statement either.
Lord are you sure Peter should have great accolades spoken of him? Then we are given the words of Acts one, on the day in the upper room where 120 were filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. God prepared Peter to be empowered on the day of Pentecost where he boldly was transformed from a man of denial to a bold ambassador for Christ. In the end Peter was killed by being nailed to a cross in an upside down ,feeling not worthy to die in the same way Jesus did.
The Lord reminds us any one of us can be transformed by the Holy Spirit to be a “rock” for Jesus.
